Story:
Raja starts his career as a petty thief (NTR as a child) and rescues a zamindar’s grand daughter (Priyamani) at a village fair. Fast forward the story and you witness the beautiful Priyamani being harassed by her two uncles (Jayaprakash Reddy and Raghu Babu) and their family following her grand father’s death. They plan to eliminate her and usurp her property passed onto her by her father.
Meanwhile NTR who is in good form as a thief along with his friend Ali strike a deal with MS Narayana to get a costume for Rs 10 lakh. Whilst on the job NTR bumps into Priyamani and after 12 years she falls for the same NTR who saves her. However NTR and Ali plot to handover Priyamani to her uncles to get a ransom of fifty lakhs. Meanwhile MS Naryana dies in the excitement of seeing the much wanted costume. NTR is angry and upset that MS Narayana died without giving him the promised money and abuses Yama the god of death for taking the comedian away. Yama played by Mohan Babu is furious and wants NTR to go through hell. He is murdered by Priyamani’s uncles and reaches The Hell. Who tortures whom and what happens to Priyamani’s love story forms the crux of the story.
Highlights:
The film released and met up with huge expectations as this was directed by Rajamouli and had NTR as the hero. NTR rocks in every aspect .Rajamouli created this subject with him in mind. The dialogues uttered by NTR was superb and it was created on the same format that the Legendary NTR worked on it in Dana Veera Soora Karna. He reminded his grandfather and his dances spelt ease and grace. One has to see it to believe the actor’s forte in foot work.
Except for Pedharayudu and RayalAseema Ramanna Chowdary, Mohan Babu didn’t get much to do in roles that he worked on in the past 12 years. This one comes as a delight and it can be termed as an intelligent casting by Rajamouli.
Rajamouli needs a pat for showing old wine in new bottle. It’s not easy to churn a successful entertainer from a clichéd subject and full marks to him for coming up with a flawless work.Though the story is not really appealing he gave it a fresh and an entertaining treatment.
Keeravani’s music i.e songs and re recording is first class. He used the same background score for NTR that was used when Duryodhana appeared in Dana Veera Soor Karna.
Visually rich and colourful, the film can be touted as one of the most expensive films made in Tollywood. The money spent on the film is evident on the screen through the grandiose and tasteful artwork and camera and styling departments. Anand Sai, Senthil and Rama Rajmouli deserve to be praised respectively on that aspect.
Mamta Mohandas who was ousted from two big banners shows her calibre in Yamadonga. She looks cute. Priyamani is okay.
Comedians Brahmanandam, Ali, MS Narayana, Raghubabu did their job well.
But on the whole it is Legend NTR’s appearance for two minutes that brought the house down. Nandamuri Fans revelled watching the grandfather-grandson duo.
Sidelights:
Not a great story but it was tad lengthy.
The pace slackened towards the end but one doesn’t get bored. The first half is fun filled entertainer .
The song Olammi Tikka Regendhi was a huge let down. The situation and picturisation of the song didn’t impress the crowds.
